DESPERATE OENOPHILES

Longoria 2007 Chardonnay, Cuvee Diana, Santa Rita Hills

Longoria 2007 Chardonnay, Cuvee Diana

One of Risqué’s favorite DVR recorded TV Series is Desperate Housewives.  When he ran across the bottle of Longoria Chardonnay, a bewildered excitement grew on his face as he couldn’t help but wonder, “Could Eva (Gabrielle) be making wine?”, as he heard she often visit’s wine bars in Santa Barbara County.  Soon visions of Wisteria Lane impaled Risqué’s mind as he closed his eyes and imagined perfectly manicured lawns, rows of comfortable houses, white picket fences and himself becoming Bob Hunter’s new boyfriend, while sitting on the porch sipping the 2007 Chardonnay with Gabrielle, Lynette, Bree, Susan and Edie… in Risqué’s favorite Spiegelau wine glasses of course!

The Chardonnay’s scent is similar to what Risqué imagines the scents to be found on Wisteria Lane… with wafts of Citrus Blossom and fresh Peach curtailed with a hint of Minerality.  The lively flavor is filled with Lemony Snickerdoodles, Floral Apples and a long finish of Honey Oak on the backside revealing subtle Pineapple acidity and lavish texture.

Risqué feels the Chardonnay makes a fabulous pairing with any white fish or organic grilled chicken dressed with a light lemon pepper sauce.  Longoria Wines also suggests pairing with sautéed Oysters.  Delish!!!

The Cuvee Diana is comprised of Rancho Santa Rosa Vineyard grapes and the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard where the “Rancho Santa Rosa grapes were harvested during the first week of October at fairly ripe sugar levels while the Sanford & Benedict grapes were harvested during the third week of October at moderate sugar levels. Both grape lots were whole cluster pressed, then settled and fermented in French oak barrels. Barrel aging took place in the same barrels for ten months on the original lees, or sediment… approximately 30% of the barrels were new”.   Risqué … and winemaker Rick Longoria believe that this practice creates a certain essence and richness to the wine.

Risqué applauds winemaker, Rick Longoria for taking him down Wisteria Lane and creating this wonderful 100% Chardonnay, but saddened that he only made 119 cases… making Risqué a Desperate Oenophile!!!!

WARNING!!! CAKEBREAD CHARDONNAY CAUSES FLASHBACKS!!!

Cakebread Cellars 2007 Chardonnay, Napa Valley, CA

Risqué is divulging a bit of his age here (Okay.. So he’s in his mid-forty’s) but it was smack dab in his mid-twenties right in the middle of the ’80’s that he first had his lips on a delicious and memorable Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay. It was on his first trip through Napa Valley and he bought an entire case at that time… To his best memory, aging gracefully (in his mind) as it is, each bottle was under $10. Although Risqué doesn’t begrudge paying the $36 a bottle for such a delight now, he still enjoys saying… “Risqué has been drinking Cakebread since Cakebread Chardonnay was $10 a bottle” and laughing hardily to cover his own amazement at how time flies!!!

The pale straw transparent liquid glimmers with glints of bright yellow that hint at the creamy butter in the nose, which is perfumed with apples, warm peach cobbler and orange blossoms under-pinned with a flinty minerality adding dimension and sophistication against the otherwise fruited nose. The palate is tantalized with crisp yet rich and creamy sensations bursting with peaches and tangy lemon zest acidity. The minerality plays out in the mouth heightening the effect from the nose and adding complexity and harmony to the fine structure and finish of this delicious specimen of Napa Chardonnay.

As Risqué sat with his lover and friends… salivating over the two bottles of delightful 2007 Chardonnay… he couldn’t help but be astonished about how long he had been enjoying this same sophisticated delight and thinking… There isn’t much from the ’80’s that Risqué wants back… but he would take back another case of that 1986 Cakebread Chardonnay and of course… his mid-twenties!!!
